Artist Statement

My work  is a celebration of healing and reclamation rooted in exploring personal pain as an expression of deeply ingrained cultural beliefs. It emerges as a vessel through which I navigate mourning, seek solace, and undergo transformative processes of reckoning with the profound impacts of colonization, whiteness, and trauma on my own body and on my communities.

Driven by spiritual motivation, sculptural forms transcends the boundaries between the personal and the political, embodying a quest for wholeness and right relationship within the intricate ecosystem of existence. I carefully select materials and palettes that resonate with the emotional texture or physical essence of the concept and attempt to allow each piece to evolve as an externalization of my journey toward clarity and integration.

Themes of abandonment, trauma, and familial dynamics infuse a sense of intimacy into my work, reflecting my personal journey of confronting the losses and privileges intertwined with my identity as a white transgender person. My intricate and dynamic work is also guided by the gift and challenge of a neurodiverse way of framing and visualizing the world, and an invisibly disabled scaffolding for navigating it.

Currently, I am immersed in the creation of a collection of painting weavings—constructed of double-sided acrylic paintings cut into strips, hand-woven, and affixed to a metal base. With each stroke of the paintings, I imbue the artwork with memories, emotions, and the complexities of the theme, navigating through layers of grief, guilt, fear, and intensity.

As I meticulously cut and restructure the paintings into intricate woven forms, the intensity gradually transmutes into quietude and patience, with each imperfection embraced as an intimate and vulnerable component of the process. The completion of each piece symbolizes the culmination of the integration of emotional intensity, transforming the artwork into a tangible testament—a tome—of my journey..

Sustainability lies at the heart of my practice, as I repurpose discarded or thrifted items to create tangible reminders of humanity's entanglement with the natural world. Experimentation with blending textile techniques and modern materials like plastic, wire, and found objects enables me to explore the synthetic texture of the absence of rootedness I experience as a white person.

Guided by intuition, imagination, and the wisdom of luminaries such as Bayo Akomolafe, bell hooks, and Octavia Butler, I draw strength from their embodied wisdom, confronting the historical origins of normative constructs and the violence upon which they were founded.

I hope that my art becomes a sacred vessel—a conduit for healing, reconciliation, and transformation—an expression of my ongoing journey toward reclaiming lost humanity and embracing the interconnectedness of all existence.
